Twenty-One

The power stirred within Violissa as she watched Sinow. She was still getting used to having it again, but she could feel a difference from what she remembered. The union had enhanced her power. Magic flowed through every cell as easily as the blood ran through her veins. It was tenfold what she remembered having before she’d been sent to the human world.

She looked at Sinow and could feel the call of his blood to hers. There was a connection now that went beyond anything she could have imagined. A hunger burned in her for him, running deep on an animalistic level. As he called his power forth, she could feel it permeate the air around her, instinctually drawing her toward him. Repressing the desire to go to him, she watched as a black mist formed around him. Fates, he was powerful. As if sensing the Darkness, her power rose to meet his. She absently wondered what their lovemaking would be like now that they were both so strong. As if to answer, her cheeks burned hot. She was glad her hood was up and that Sinow was distracted.

The sky turned black, the ground bellowed beneath them, not because Sinow could suddenly control it but rather in reaction to the Dark power barraging it, and he had yet to truly invoke his full power. He lifted his head toward the sky, slowly raising his hands to his waist. The barrier trembled. Violissa could see it now, could see the magic that held it in place begin to break. She could also see the cracks where it had started to give way to Tynan. It would not have held long had they waited.

Darkness engulfed them, and she knew it had nothing to do with any residual connection to nature he might have. This was his magic, Dark magic. It felt heavy against her skin, oppressive, nearly suffocating. She dimly heard the fearful responses of the people hidden nearest to her and sent a wave of calming magic toward them. The ground rumbled, rebelling against the Dark. A whirl of black tendrils drew up and encased Sinow, shades of red and gray flickering within them. He pushed his hands out, and the tendrils tore from him in one massive cloud. The resulting mass slammed the barrier with such a force that it shattered the magic that had encapsulated the realm since the first of Sinow’s kin. Tremors rocked the land, and shards of the now fragmented barrier began to fall. Violissa threw a hand up toward the falling pieces transforming them into light so that thousands of silvery glimmers of diamond delicately dropped from the sky, landing all around them, lighting the world against the darkness Sinow had summoned.

Violissa could feel the ripples of power that emanated from him. As the last sliver of silver dissipated, he tilted his head up and commanded, “Tynan!”

The dark world around them somehow became darker. The gray clouds that covered the sun deepened to a rich black that allowed only small beams of sunlight to penetrate them.
